Dangerous Descents

Dangerous Descents

2022

Commissioned By Scottish Society of Artists for 130 year celebration exhibition, and responding to work by sculptor George Wyllie.

I am playing with the word descending, to allude to the decrease in numbers of many animal species and their endangered status. This playful piece has a serious social comment, with a clear message, using quirkiness to prompt deeper thought. The textile legs, based on 7 animals on the Red List, including Dugong, Polar Bear and Red Squirrel, go up as well as down, offering hope that things could change, if humans respond differently to climate crisis. This kinetic piece is activated by a sensor detecting motion of audience.

2.2m tall, mains powered, mixed media, motor, amp and motion sensor.
